People Don’t Need It
That sermon you’re going to preach. People don’t need to hear it.The lecture about this or that subject. The students really don’t need that either.That blog post. Not necessary.The sales pitch. Waste of time.The presentation or report or analysis. Nope.The reminder of the great return policy. Useless.The assurance of the warranty on that product. Come on. Please.Everyone has a super computer in their pocket. The information, the policy, the manual, the (fill in any information)—it’s all there and accessible with a quick, “Hey Siri…”This is not an easy truth to accept when your work, your role, your position (on any level) is to supply information.But it’s the first of many hurdles to jump to bring value to your work, to show up and do more than just clock in. It’s the first of many hurdles to creating alternatives to what we are experiencing. It’s the first of many hurdles to not being dispensable.People like us who are unwilling to continue in ways like this are able to answer the Why? questions of the information we put into the world.Why that lecture or sermon or presentation?Why now? Why you?Why in that way on this day in that form?
