Not Going Back
[Coronavirus - III]
What we don’t know: what the new normal will look like.
What we do know: the old normal is gone.
People like us aren’t wishing for the return of the way it was two months ago. Actually, we were already preparing—talking, studying, practicing, dreaming about a different future, just not one that came about due to a viral wake-up call—for a new normal because we knew in our bones the way things were was unsustainable, imbalanced, and often unjust.
A vaccine will come in due course.
So will a stimulus package.
And new leadership.
But it won’t be on the backside of this calamity; it will be on the front side of the future that includes the ongoing possibility of this type of calamity. If we’re waiting for things to return to normal, we’ll be waiting forever. We’ve entered the future that many of us feared.
Nobody survives long trying to drive and looking out the back window.
